The word "Japan" is not a Japanese word. The Japanese people call their country "にほん" /nihon/ or "にっぽん" /nippon/, which roughly translates as "the Sun’s origin".

Japanese is one of the fastest spoken languages

A recent research compared the speed (in syllables per second) at which native speakers from various countries talk. Japanese topped the list at 7.84 syllables per second.

Japanese has no relation to any other languages

Despite the fact that Japanese alphabet Kanji uses Chinese characters, the Japanese language is not based on Chinese. Unlike other widely-spoken languages, Japanese is not closely related to any other major language in the world.

Some major Japanese dialects

Kantō-ben

The Tokyo dialect, considered to be standard Japanese;

Spoken without much intonation;

Used in education, mass culture, television, radio, etc.;

Kansai-ben

Second major dialect in Japan;

Spoken in major cities like Osaka and Kyoto;

Spoken faster and with more intonation;

Has unique words:
おおきに /okini/ - thank you;
ほんま /honma/ - really?

Tohoku-ben

Spoken in the Tōhoku region and differs from Standard Japanese;

Seems slow, much like a country speech to the Kanto and Kansai speakers;

Subtitles are needed when Tohoku speakers appear on TV;

Also called Zūzū-ben.

Kyushu-ben

The Kyushu dialects are classified into three major groups: Hichiku, Hōnichi & Kagoshima;

Most of its dialects are totally unintelligible to other Japanese speakers;

Some of the vowels are pronounced differently;

Characterized by adjectives ending in /-ka/. For example /samuka/ for /samui/ (cold).
